A new study just published in the February issue of the journal Ophthalmology has found that a blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidant carotenoids may actually reverse early age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the Western world among individuals over the age of 55. AMD affects some 25 to 30 million people worldwide, but that number is expected to triple with the aging Baby Boomer generation. AMD is the deterioration if the macula, part of the central retina. This deterioration results in a loss of the central vision, leaving only peripheral vision.
The Italian study's results were limited by its small size (only 27 people were involved), but the results are quite interesting nonetheless. The researchers selected 27 otherwise healthy adults (average age 69.6 years) diagnosed with non-advanced AMD. The researchers randomly assigned 15 participants to receive a multivitamin supplement consisting of vitamins C & E, zinc, copper, lutein, zeaxanthin, and astaxanthin for one year. The remaining 12 participants received a placebo. The researchers reported that the participants taking the supplement showed advancements in the function of the central retina, in the range of zero to five degrees. There were improvements in the peripheral visions by 5 to 20 degrees.
This study adds an interesting twist to the 1994 NIH study that found a similar combination of ingredients may prevent AMD. Optim-Eyes High-Potency Vision Support Formula contains all the nutrients used in these two studies.
