Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading killers of Americans and February happens to be American Heart Month. February also happens to be the month of St. Valentine's Day, the holiday on which we celebrate love and romance. We couldn't have dreamt of a better news article to tie the two together; research about a single product that is beneficial for both the heart and sexual health in women and men. It may sound too good to be true, but it's not.
The supplement, L-arginine, is an amino acid that works by increasing the nitric oxide, a signaling molecule in the blood, which in turn works as a vasodilator increasing blood flow through the body. A dysfunction in the L-arginine-nitric oxide pathway may reduce blood flow and may limit the ability to perform physical activity and sexual function. As a brief aside, the discovery of nitric oxide as signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998.
A recent study conducted in France found that supplementing heart failure patients with L-Arginine may improve their athletic endurance and improve their physical fitness.1 In the study, researchers evaluated "chronic stable heart failure" patients' blood dynamics (blood chemistry and flow), and respiratory and metabolic parameters at rest, during exercise, and during recovery. The researcher then administered either a placebo or l-arginine orally to patients for 6 weeks and retested the subjects. The patients who had received the l-arginine had decreased heart rates during exercise and in the recovery period, their blood pressure and respiratory parameters went unchanged, and their lactate levels were suppressed. Based on these results, researchers concluded that chronic oral supplementation of l-arginine may be useful in addition to therapy to improve a patient's physical fitness and thereby their quality of life.
L-Arginine is found in large amounts in both Veromax and ViriLife sexual health products.
