What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a phenolic compound that has been found to have strong antioxidant activity. Plants create resveratrol to protect themselves against the effects of poor growing conditions and severe weather. Resveratrol has been shown to reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. There have been numerous studies that show the benefits of moderate red wine consumption on health. Red wine is fermented with the antioxidant-potent grape skins present; some studies suggest that the intake of red wine (and therefore resveratrol) may yield cholesterol-lowering effects. This is one way that red wine consumption protects the heart.3 In addition to red wine and grape skin, Japanese Knotweed is an excellent source of resveratrol.


What is Pomegranate?


A pomegranate is the delicious, seedy fruit from the pomegranate tree, and has long been used in Traditional Eastern Medicines for treating diseases and infections.

Recently there has been much interest in medical research on the health benefits of this fruit. According to research pioneer Professor Michael Aviram of the Lipid Research Laboratory at the Technion-Israel of Technology, "Pomegranates are proving to be the most powerful antioxidant available, better than red wine, tomatoes, vitamin E and a variety of other headline makers."1

In addition to the seeds, skin and flesh, pomegranates are composed of alkaloids and polyphenols, phytochemicals that are potent antioxidants. The active constituent in pomegranate extract appears to be a phenolic compound known as ellagic acid. Ellagic acid occurs naturally in certain fruits and boasts antioxidant and anti-viral benefits. Like the polyphenolic component in green tea, as well as the polyphenolic component in red wine (resveratrol), ellagic acid imparts important antioxidant benefits to the user, including immune system support and a reduction in oxidation of LDL cholesterol. In addition, pomegranates have been shown to have three times the antioxidant effect of red wine or green tea.2

What is Grape Skin Extract?

Grape skin extract is derived from the skins of red grapes, the same kind that are used to make wine. Grape skins are rich in compounds that protect the delicate flesh and seeds. The two most important of these compounds are resveratrol and a class of tannins called oligomeric procyanidins or OPCs. These OPC are also widely available in the seeds, but it is in fact the skins that give red wines their color, bitterness and many of their more complex flavors.

A study published in the November 28, 2006 issue of the journal Nature found that OPC did more to protect the heart than any other compounds in red wine.70 Putting that discovery to a "real-world" test, the researchers used French census data to determine that the men living in Sardinia and the Gers region of southwestern France had the longest life expectancies. Those regions also produce the wines with the highest OPC content, up to 4 times higher than other regions. Typically in wine making, grape skins are removed after a week to keep the bitter tannin levels low. However, in these regions the skins are often left to ferment in the wine for 4 weeks or more. This allows for more of the OPC to accumulate in the wines of Sardina and Gers.The most valuable flavonoids in grape skin extract are oligomeric procyanidins (also known as proanthocyanidins), commonly called OPCs. In addition to their antioxidant properties, OPCs are thought to improve blood circulation and help strengthen blood vessels.


What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are compounds made from vitamins, minerals and enzymes that help protect our body from the oxidative damages of free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can bind to and destroy body components. Free radicals are unstable atoms or molecules with at least one unpaired electron that search the body for another electron to pair up with. If they find an electron, they take it and become stable. However, the process makes the atoms or molecules that they took the electron from unstable, thereby creating a new free radical. This free radical or 'oxidative' damage is what makes us age and is responsible for the initiation of many diseases, including heart disease and cancer. The serious damage from free radicals seems to come in the act of searching for, entering into and taking electrons from cells. This 'oxidization' activity damages cell structures, particularly the cellular plasma membranes. Plasma cell membranes are natural gate keepers for cells, deciding what comes and goes within the cell. Damaging the plasma cell membrane and/or having the presence of free radicals in the cell, can damage the cell's ability to generate energy (in the mitochondria organelles), damage the cell's nucleus or damage the cell's DNA. Through this process the use and movement of nutrients, oxygen, water, waste products and toxins can also be hindered.

We are exposed to free radicals everyday - from pesticides in the foods we eat, toxins in the water we drink, to the polluted air we breathe. Antioxidants can help stop or impede the activities and impacts of free radicals and play a role in reinforcing your overall health and resilience.
