What is Ginkgo Biloba?
Ginkgo Biloba Extract is the extract of the leaves of the common ginkgo biloba tree. The standardized ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) requires a 50:1 ratio of leaves to extract, and extraction of GBE from the leaves is a very long process. The resulting extract contains ginkgo flavonglycosides (bioflavonoids) and terpene lactones as its active parts. Ginkgo Biloba Extract is used for several purported benefits include supporting mental acuity, circulation, and eye health, and for help in addressing age-related memory decline, ringing in the ear and low mood.

Why Is Our Ginkgo Biloba Better?
The quality of ginkgo biloba products on the market varies dramatically. Our Ginkgo Biloba contains fresh, potent, standardized ginkgo biloba extract plus 300mg of ground whole Ginkgo Biloba leaf per capsule, which gives you an extra 6mg Terpenes per capsule plus all the natural compounds present in the whole leaf -- compounds that are omitted in other products which only contain extract. Our Ginkgo Biloba tests, in the laboratory, to a minimum of 24% ginkgo flavonglycosides and 7% terpene lactones! Remember, if you want the benefits that the studies have shown, you need to use the same quality ginkgo biloba that the studies have used. In fact, our Ginkgo was selected by researchers from among all the ginkgo biloba products on the market, for several studies on ginkgo biloba conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. If a supplier does not list their concentration of ginkgo flavonglycosides or terpene lactones, don't buy it because there's no way of knowing what you are getting. Additionally, we use 100% vegetarian capsules for our Ginkgo Biloba, so it is gelatin-free.

Many companies never test their ginkgo for its terpene lactone concentration. The majority of the ginkgo biloba products on the market (over 90% of them) are either ginkgo extract standardized only to the ginkgo flavonglycosides and then sprayed on alfalfa leaves (because they are cheap), or it is simply unstandardized ground ginkgo leaves, which means you will have no idea how much of the active compounds are in each capsule!

Our ginkgo is the highest quality available at any price, and we are able to offer it at a great price because we have no middlemen, and we sell so much of it. Many companies sell lower quality ginkgo for much more, and usually they don't even know why their ginkgo is low-quality -- just ask them questions, and you'll see!

Each capsule of our ginkgo contains:
Ginkgo Biloba Extract 60mg, Consisting of:
  • Ginkgo Flavonglycosides 15 mg
    • Quercetin 7.3 mg
    • Kaempferol 6.7 mg
    • Isorhamnetin 1.4 mg
  • Total Ginkgo Terpene Lactones 4.8 mg
    • Bilobalide 1.6 mg
    • Ginkgolide A 1.6 mg
    • Ginkgolide B 0.8 mg
    • Ginkgolide C 0.8 mg
  • Ginkgo biloba leaf, ground 300 mg

Who Should Consider Ginkgo Biloba?
Ginkgo Biloba's purported benefits include supporting mental acuity, circulation, and eye health, and for help in addressing age-related memory decline, ringing in the ear and low mood. Among Ginkgo Biloba's traditional uses are the following:
  • Memory loss associated with aging2,19,24
  • Early stages of age-related mental decline13,15
  • Poor circulation2,11
  • Rinning in the ear2
  • Retinal edema2
  • Hearing loss2

How Does Ginkgo Biloba Work?

Ginkgo Biloba LeafGinkgo biloba extract increases blood flow to the brain by inhibiting blood platelet aggregation and by regulating blood vessel elasticity. It has been shown to improve blood flow through both major blood vessels and capillaries. Ginkgo Biloba is also a powerful antioxidant. Ginkgo biloba extract has two major groups of components, ginkgo flavonglycosides and terpene lactones. Its efficacy depends on their proper balance and a standardized extraction method has been developed to ensure that balance. Basically, these two constituents or groups of constituents are responsible for ginkgo biloba's two main properties: the ability to inhibit blood platelet aggregation (which allows for greater flow of blood to the brain and extremities) and its strong antioxidant properties (which exert a protective influence over the brain and central nervous system).

Ginkgo Biloba's Use in Alzheimer's Disease

Ginkgo Biloba Extract may beneficial in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Studies have show that it may be effective in slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease, in improving the mental function of elderly people having suffered several "mini-strokes", and if the patient's dementia is caused by lack of blood flow to the brain, it may reverse the problem.2,6,13,15,19

Recommended Ginkgo Biloba Quality and Amount

You will want to use the same substance proven beneficial in the various studies performed: 120mg twice daily of standardized Ginkgo Biloba extract containing 24% ginkgo flavonglycosides and 6% terpene lactones.2,3 This would be equivalent to 2 of our capsules, twice daily. Allow 12 weeks of use before determining its efficacy.

Side Effects
Side effects are rare with use of the standardized extract. Mild gastrointestinal upset occurs in less than 1 percent of patients in clinical studies. Some patients with poor blood flow to the brain (i.e., cerebrovascular insufficiency) may experience a mild, transient headache for the first one or two days of use. There are no known interactions with commonly prescribed drugs. The current German Commission E monograph lists no contraindications to the use of ginkgo during pregnancy or lactation.1 Nonetheless, Ginkgo Biloba should not be used with any other substances that produce a blood-thinning effect, without consulting a medical practitioner.

Interactions
Ginkgo Biloba exhibits anti-platelet aggregation properties. Therefore, it should not be used in conjunction with other products that exhibit similar properties, including angelica, clove, danshen, garlic, ginkgo biloba, panax ginseng, red clover and willow.

Concomitant use of this product with the following drugs might increase the risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet aggregation: aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), Phenprocoumon (a warfarin-related anticoagulant used in Europe) and others.
