What is AntiOxidant Ultra?
Quite simply, Antioxidant Ultra™ was designed to be a powerful antioxidant supplement. An antioxidant is a substance that reduces the oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable atoms or molecules with at least one unpaired electron. These atoms or molecules with unpaired electrons seek out another electron to pair with to make them stable. If they find an electron, they take it. That makes them stable, but it makes the atoms or molecules that they took the electron from, unstable. This makes for a new, free radical.
Additionally, the serious damage from Free Radicals seems to come in the act of searching for, piercing into and taking electrons from cells. This 'oxidization' activity damages cell structures, particularly the cellular plasma membranes. Plasma cell membranes are natural gate keepers for cells, deciding what comes and goes within the cell. Damaging the plasma cell membrane and/or having the presence of free radicals in the cell, can damage the cell's ability to generate energy (in the mitochondria organelles), damage the cell's nucleus and/or damage the cell's DNA. Through this process the use and movement of nutrients, oxygen, water, waste products and toxins can also be hindered.

So how do we reduce the activities or impacts of free radicals? The answer is the aforementioned Antioxidants. Antioxidants inhibit the oxidation and/or the reactions that are caused by free radicals and by doing so, limit or stop the effects of free radicals.

AntiOxidant Ultra™ contains Green Tea Extract:
What is amazing about green tea is its reported ability to potentially hinder the onset of many types of cancer. Much of the initial evidence that green tea may have anti-carcinogenic properties is based on epidemiological studies which show lower rates of many types of cancer among populations such as Japan and China that drink green tea as part of a daily cultural habit. Recently, however, controlled studies on green tea extract have yielded impressive results, identifying the polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as the responsible component. EGCG is able to force certain cancer cells into a situation in which, they must die or be killed; the cancer cells die in a sort of cellular suicide, a condition scientists call 'apoptosis'. Further evidence shows EGCG as having an inhibitory effect on the enzyme, urokinase, which is required for tumor formation, thus inhibiting the formation of tumors in the first place.26,27,30,31,32,33,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,44,45,46,47,48,49,55

AntiOxidant Ultra™ contains OPC Grape Seed Extract:
OPCs (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins) are a set of bioflavonoid complexes that perform as Free Radical scavengers in the human body. Many names refer to this set of bioflavonoids, including PCO's, Oligomeric Procyanidolic Complexes, leuco anthocyanin, anthocyanidin and still others. We will refer to them as OPCs for the duration of this discussion. OPCs are types of bioflavonoids, very powerful ones. Bioflavonoids are parts of plants that are actually assimilated into our body tissues when we consume them. OPC bioflavonoids were first noticed in the laboratory because they have the uncanny ability to strengthen blood vessel walls within hours after taking them.
AntiOxidant Ultra™ contains Bilberry and Cranberry Extracts:
Bilberry Extract is the dry extract of the European Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus: Myrtilli fructus) and Cranberry is the red acidic fruit of the shrubby viburnum of North America and Europe.
Since AntiOxidant Ultra™ already has Green Tea and Grape Seed Extract, why add berries? Firstly because Bilberry has one of the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacities (ORAC) of any antioxidant, meaning its ability to hinder the damages of the oxidation process is very strong.
Cranberry extract has also been shown to have a high ORAC value and is a rich source of proanthocyanidins. Additionally some studies have found that it may have anti-microbial properties, and may therefore support immunity. One study found that is the proanthocyanidins that are responsible for the anti-microbial benefits; they do this by prevent certain bacteria from adhering to host cells.
AntiOxidant Ultra™ contains Curcumin:
Curcumin is extracted from a large-leaved herb, closely related to ginger called the turmeric plant. Curcumin is an antioxidant and as such it helps to protect against the damaging effects of free radicals. It also stimulates the body to naturally produce more histamine-lowering cortisone. Curcumin also appears to protect the liver from toxic compounds, which in turn, may improve general health. 21 It also seems to inhibit platelet clumping, which may reduce arterial scaring and reduce swelling due to blunt force injuries. (And on this point, be sure to read the cautionary notice below.) But the most important aspect of curcumin is its apparent ability to inhibit mediators of inflammation, such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), lipooxygenase (LOX). The combined effect of these mechanism indicated that curcumin may have both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
AntiOxidant Ultra™ contains Milk Thistle Extract / Silybum marianum:
The seeds of the dried flower of the milk thistle plant (Silybum marianum), containing the active silymarin complex, including the component silibinin. Milk thistle has been shown to have the following characteristics:
- Milk thistle is a powerful antioxidant. Like any bioflavonoid complex, milk thistle exerts a powerful antioxidant effect.

Side Effects
Always discuss any supplements or medications that you are taking with your physician. As these products and this combination have not been tested during pregnancy, do not use during pregnancy or while nursing. Milk thistle can cause some gastric distress for the first two days and then the symptoms should subside.
