Background on Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a slightly modified form of the essential omega-6 fatty acid Linoleic Acid, found in meats and dairy products. The human body cannot produce linoleic acid on its own and must get it from these types of sources. CLA is also a potent antioxidant, anti-carcinogen, and has been known to enhance the immune system.1

Conjugated Linoleic Acid is an important omega-6 fatty acid that can help:

  • reduce body fat and increase lean muscle mass;
  • maintain healthy heart and arteries;
  • maintain mood through prostaglandin modulation;
  • relieve Eczema and maintain healthy skin;
  • keep cell membranes working properly and efficiently;
  • relieve Diabetic neuropathy;
  • relieve PMS and cyclical breast pain

CLA and Fat Loss

There has been much research done on the effects of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), some focusing on body fat reduction and weight loss. One such study, a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted by Dr. Michael Pariza with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The study of 71 dieters found that when the diesters discontinued dieting, they were more likely to gain muscle than fat if they were supplementing with CLA.2

In August 2001, Swedish researchers studied 53 men and women. The control group was given placebo capsules while the test group received capsules containing 4.2 g/d of conjugated linoleic acid. All participants were asked to not alter their lifestyle in any way - no additional exercise, supplementation or dieting. At the conclusion of the study those taking CLA experienced body fat reduction of 3.8%.3 Their findings suggest that CLA prevents fat from accumulating in the body either by reducing fat metabolism or increasing the burning of calories.

CLA and the bodybuilding community

Many bodybuilders use Conjugated Linoleic Acid for help in:
  • increasing metabolic rate7
  • enhancing muscle growth4,5
  • enhancing immune system6
  • lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels7
Attention dieters

Weight loss occurs when a person burns more calories than s/he ingests. Therefore, eating less, eating right, and exercising are essential to your weight loss program. Easier said than done! Additionally, it is important to focus on fat loss as opposed to just weight loss, since nobody has a reason to want to lose lean muscle tissue. The products we offer can be a valuable aid in your effort, if used responsibly. Our customers who heed this advice invariably succeed and often report to us that our products were helpful to them. Remember, it is impossible to "lose weight overnight" in a healthy manner. Permanent, healthy weight loss takes time and dedication. Good luck, we know you can do it!
