WholeHealth's Environmental Initiatives
Whole Health is dedicated to helping protect the environment and has become an industry leader in reducing our environmental impact.
In addition to our overall commitment to be a good corporate citizen, our employees are healthy, active people who spend a great deal of time enjoying the Colorado outdoors. These outdoor pursuits are a constant reminder of the importance of doing what we can to protect our natural resources and environment. Our "green" programs are not only strict policy statements, they are initiatives that our employees actively embrace.
Green Energy and Smart Energy Use:
Our offices and warehouse are powered by rooftop solar panels. Given the amount of sunshine enjoyed by Colorado, rooftop solar is an excellent way for us to reduce our carbon footprint and consumption of fossil fuels. Instead of generating heat, our roof now generates electricity.
But, smart energy starts with conservation, which is why we only purchase Energy-Star rated computer equipment, use energy efficient lighting, and employ programmable thermostats throughout our facility.
100% Recycled Eco-Bottles™:
We are currently transitioning our entire WholeHealth® product line to our new, exclusive, blue Eco-Bottle™ which is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. No new plastic is created to manufacture these BPA-free, FDA-compliant bottles, which is not only 100% recycled, but also 100% recyclable. WholeHealth is one of the very earliest supplement brands who have made a commitment to the environment by choosing 100% post-consumer recycled bottles. Look for the recycle logo on our product labels.
Our use of this bottle has two strong impacts. First, our Eco-Bottles prevent the manufacturing of virgin plastic from petroleum, which is an important impact alone. We are not creating new plastic, and we reducing our country's reliance on fossil fuels. Secondly, our use of these bottles creates a downstream demand for recycled plastic, which improves the economic calculation of plastic recycling, collection and processing. Ultimately, the use of recycled plastics (and consumer purchases of products in recycled plastic) will create an economic response for greater recycling even among people and in communities where there may not be as great of a concern for the environment. People and government will respond to these positive economics.
During our transition to this new bottle, we will exhaust our existing supply of product labels and inventory of #1 PETE bottles--we don't want to create unnecessary waste for the sole purpose of a faster transition to recycled bottles labeled as such! Unfortunately this means that timing may be off a bit. For example, a product packaged in our Eco-Bottle™ may not yet have a new label noting Eco-Bottle™.
Our transition to the Eco-Bottle™ began in July 2010, and our goal is to have all WholeHealth products packaged in our Eco-Bottle by the end of 2011. As of March 31, 2011, the half-way point of this 18-month project, 65% of all WholeHealth products shipping to consumers are already packaged in our Eco-Bottle! With your help, this effort will make a huge impact--we have already prevented the manufacturing of tens of thousands of virgin plastic bottles!
Sustainable Ingredients:
Since our company founding in 1997, we have been committed to sourcing sustainable ingredients--which means no "wild-crafted" or "wild-harvested" herbal products or botanicals, and no shark cartilage, for example. When a product is grown as an agricultural crop, people have a financial incentive to ensure survival of the species; this is not the case with wild-harvested ingredients, particularly in poor regions of the world where the destruction of a plant or animal species may not be apparent at the individual level, as he or she pursues what appears to be purely an economic opportunity.
Whole Health is one of the few companies in our industry that has made this commitment to the environment and to protecting the world's resources. Many in our industry present wildcrafting as somehow being more natural or wholesome, while ignoring the impact. We take an extra minute to educate our consumers on the reality of wildcrafting because consumer demand will change their behavior.
At WholeHealth, we have also been early adopters of ingredients made by sustainable “bio-factories” such as Fluxome® resveratrol and Kaneka® CoEnzyme Q10 which are made through natural fermentation. This ensures not only a high quality ingredient from a controlled environment, but it is also sustainable.
Recycling, Recycled Products, and Environmentally Friendly Alternatives:
We don't stop with what goes into our products or with our bottles, but we also look at how we get our products to our customers. We only buy "biofill" instead of polystyrene packing peas for use in shipments to our customers. These biodegradable packing peas are made from corn starch instead of petroleum. Simply get them wet, and you can watch them dissolve! We reuse any polystyrene peas that are shipped to us.
We reuse all corrugated cardboard boxes and packaging material that we can. As a customer, you probably have received a package in a reused box. We recycle what we are unable to reuse.
In our offices, we strive to reduce consumption of office paper and toner, and we recycle all used paper, glass, aluminum cans and acceptable plastics (#1-#5). We refill all toner cartridges several times before recycling them. And, our wireless keyboards and mice are all powered by rechargeable batteries.
As the result of these efforts, the dumpster we contract for is the smallest offered by the waste management company, and we contract them to collect it only once every two weeks--the least frequent service offered. It is never full. Not only does this mean less garbage in the landfill, it also means less fuel required to collect and transport it.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle:
At WholeHealth, we embrace these principals not only because it is important to our customers, but because it is important to us personally. We look at our ingredients, our bottles, our shipping materials, our source of electricity, our office supplies, our computer equipment, our energy use and our waste stream. From start-to-finish, we are constantly re-evaluating how we can do more to use less. We are quite proud of our efforts, and their positive impact, as you can probably tell if you have read this far!
