Probiotics
What are Probiotics?
Probiotics are beneficial microorganism, primarily bacteria, but also yeasts and other microorganism, that live within our digestive tract. Research indicates that these organisms may provide us with a number of health benefits. Not only do these "intestinal flora" manufacture nutrients, such as vitamin B12, that our body uses, but when they are present in healthy, robust numbers, they can make our bodies poor hosts for harmful bacteria. That is to say, they act as a nature adjunct to our immune system.
Antibiotic medicines and the modern western diet may significantly reduce these naturally occurring organisms. This may lead to an increased sensitivity in the digestive tract, a weakened immune system, and an environment that is more welcoming to harmful bacteria.
Why Are Our Priobitic Supplements Better?
Anyone who has tried a probiotic before and not seen much benefit may have had that experience because of a poor product. Our probiotics have much higher CFU counts (colony-forming units--the unit by which which probiotic "strength" is measured) than most store brands. Further, the strains selected for use in our probiotics are "room-temperature stable"--meaning that they can survive at room temperatures. Until recently, all probiotic supplements had to be store under refrigeration because the bacteria could not survive for long at room temperature. Merely shipping the products to stores or consumers could kill half (or more) of the organisms. But recent research has produced better strains for use in supplements.
Who Should Consider a Probiotic Supplement?
Probiotic supplements are ideal for several groups of people. The first group are people who are concerned that their diet may not provide sufficient probiotic support. Given the recent research on the array of health benefits provided by probiotics, this is a large group.
Anyone who is currently taking, or who has recently finished, a course of antibiotics may benefit from probiotics. In Japan and several European countries, it is now routine for a doctor to prescribe probiotics to be taken with and/or after a course of antibiotics. This is because antibiotics can kill beneficial bacteria as well as the harmful ones being targeted by the antibiotics, leaving the body depleted of these beneficial organisms.
People who will be traveling abroad (before, during and after a trip), and anyone who has been suffering from recurrent or chronic abdominal distress, can benefit from probiotics. Flooding the intestines with beneficial bacteria can create a very hostile environment for harmful bacteria, preventing them from being able to reproduce and cause problems.
Probiotics may help provide the following benefits:
- Improved digestion
- Improved immune function
- Increased resistance to food and other allergies
- Reduced lactose intolerance symptoms
- Reduced gastrointestinal distress
- Reduced gas and bloating
- Reduced incidences of traveler's diarrhea
- Re-colonizing the intestine after antibiotic usage
