Resveratrol
What Is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a compound that is naturally produced by some plants as part of their natural defenses--to protect themselves against the effects of poor growing conditions, severe weather and attacks by insects and disease. Resveratrol has been found to have strong antioxidant activity in animals.
Resveratrol and Health
Numerous studies showing the benefits to health from moderate red wine consumption sparked the research on resveratrol over a decade ago. Red wine differs from white in that it is fermented with the resveratrol-containing grape skins present during fermentation. The fermentation process imparts the resveratrol (and other anitoxidants in the grape skin) into the finished red wine.
Recent studies on animals have shown resveratrol to dramatically increase life span, increase athletic endurance, and mimic the health benefits of a calorie-restricted diet. Addition, resveratrol has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant that may help reduce inflammation, reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular disease. In short, resveratrol has been shown to be potentially quite important!
Resveratrol Isomers and Product Labels In nature, resveratrol exists as two different isomers called trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol. These prefixes, "trans-" and "cis-", refer to the shape of the molecule. Researchers have identified the trans-resveratrol isomer as the biologically active of the two. As a consumer, you want to read the product label and look for the active "trans-resveratrol" molecule in the Supplement Facts.
Why are Our Resveratrol Products Better?
There are currently 3 sources for resveratrol: plant extraction, chemical synthesis and natural fermentation.
The vast majority of resveratrol is produced by extracting the compound from the root of a plant called Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), a plant native to eastern China, Japan and Korea. All knotweed-derived resveratrol currently available in the market is made in China. Knotweed is used so commonly because this plant contains a greater concentration of resveratrol than any other plant, making extraction of resveratrol from knotweed economical. The potential problem caused by the extraction process is that it can concentrate every compound found in a plant as well as heavy metals. In the case of knotweed, this can lead to a high concentration of an unwanted compound called emodin, which naturally occurs in knotweed and acts as a laxative. Fortunately, there are more sophisticated extraction processes that can help the manufacturer concentrate the desired compound(s) without concentrating the unwanted compounds like emodin.
Whole Health sells some products containing resveratrol from knotweed; we require that our suppliers of this ingredient test for emodin, and we do not accept product with emodin at concentrations greater than 2%. Most knotweed-derived resveratrol contains 5-6% emodin, which is enough to produce a laxative effect in many people. Additionally, we test for the presence of heavy metals. Consumers of knotweed-derived resveratrol (listed as knotweed or Polygonum cuspidatum on the Supplement Facts) should demand these standards. Chemical synthesis is what is sounds like: take some chemicals, mix them together and produce a different chemical. From the perspective of the natural products industry, this is not an attractive process. Whole Health does not sell any products containing resveratrol produced from chemical synthesis.
Resveratrol from natural yeast fermentation is very new. Fluxome® brand resveratrol is the only resveratrol produced through natural yeast fermentation, and it is the World's purest natural resveratrol. This product is the result of years of research originally backed by the Danish government, and now made in the U.S. Unlike other forms of resveratrol, Fluxome Resveratrol is an all-natural, minimally-processed ingredient that is produced entirely in the United States using only 3 pure ingredients, all from the U.S.: yeast, organic sugar, and water. It is the purest form of naturally-derived resveratrol available. You can learn more about this ingredient, and the years of research that it took to perfect this process, at our page of products that contain Fluxome Resveratrol.
