What is Valerian Root?
The decoction, infusion, fluid extract and tincture of ground Valerian root is used against restlessness, and sleeplessness, and is quite calming indeed. Responsible for these effects is the essential oil containing the so-called "valerenic acids" (monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes). This plant does not contain valium, a myth probably perpetuated by those who are aware of its similar sounding name and loosely similar effects. Valerian is actually much safer than Valium. Who Should Consider Valerian Root?
Most people use Valerian to combat restless, sleepless nights.
